Tips for Insurance Claims - Ireland - Britton Insurance Brokers
If in the unfortunate event that you are involved in an accident, here are the main guidelines which you should follow in order to make it easier for yourself. Cheap car insurance policies often fail when you need them most, so this article should help you avoid many of the pitfalls.
Make sure that no one is injured – if someone is injured, do not move them and call the emergency services as quick as possible. If no one is injured and the vehicles are causing an obstruction or could result in another accident, move them to the side of the road or somewhere that is safe. If they are in a safe position please do not move them as the Gardai will find it easier to determine the cause of the accident .
Call the Gardai – It is important after every accident no matter how small that the Gardai are called as at a later date this may become an issue. Often if there is no injury the Gardai will not come out but they will have record of the incident
Swapping of Information – If a Third Party is involved, it is very important that you exchange all relevant information including name, contact details, insurance company, policy number and registrations. This will make it easier for both parties to sort out the claim
Witnesses – If someone has seen the accident, please get their name and contact number as in the event of a dispute in liability an independent witness can be of great use
Photos – If possible take photographs of the vehicles and the surrounding areas as this can help assessors determine the cause of the accident and therefore confirm liability
Liability – Do not accept or discuss liability at the scene of the accident as this can cause problems later on. Be aware that you are in shock after an accident and may not see things as clearly as usual. You may think you are at fault but when all settles down you might realise you are not but have already accepted blame.
Contact your broker/insurance company – As soon as it is possible, please contact your broker to report the accident as the sooner this is done the sooner your insurance company can get your claim sorted and therefore you back on the road. It is important that you do not get your vehicle repaired before your company has said so as this can severely jeopardise your claim.
